Sandy Steil has spent the better part of the last two decades working for architecture and civil engineering firms to develop residential, commercial, civic and industrial sites for communities in central Iowa. After serving four years active duty in the United States Air Force, she studied architecture and design at the University of Iowa and graduated with a bachelor’s of fine arts degree in 3-D design.
Sandy is the creator and founder of the Home Improvement and Woodworking Confidence Courses for Women. The title of the courses was inspired by the Confidence Course that Sandy went through in Air Force basic training. The home improvement confidence courses give women the opportunity to learn how to do basic and not-so-basic improvements in a real-world remodeling environment free of judgement and comparison. The woodworking course introduces students to the tools, various wood species and techniques needed for creating the fine finishing work for home improvement and furniture projects. Sandy brought together many organizations, businesses and individuals to make these courses happen, including Kirkwood Community College, Habitat for Humanity, G.T. Karr of Sueppel’s Siding and Remodeling, The Greater Iowa City Home Builders Association, the City of Iowa City, Johnson County Conservation and the late Amy Pretorious. The Confidence Courses give women the opportunity to remodel and build and also shed light on important topics that go beyond case, base and trim.
Sandy is currently on the board of directors and legislative committee for the Greater Iowa City Home Builders Association. She was voted one of the top 25 Most Influential Leaders in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Corridor and a Woman of Influence.
